Douglas Orndorff, MD

"Excellent!! Everyone in this office “listens” to me the patient. Thanks to all of these dedicated caregivers my surgery + recuperation have been optimal." (P.A. Rancalti)

"I am very happy with everything that Dr. Orndorff has done for me. I owe him so much. I trust him very much. He saved me from ending up in a wheelchair. He is a blessing." (Rudy)

"You have a great team. I like the education you give. I felt that I knew what was going to happen and what to expect. They even told me what to have ready at home. I was in severe pain before the surgery and the pain is gone. Knowing what I know now I wish I would have done it sooner. You have a TEAM. I really enjoyed the Steps to Success, massage, and thoughtful questions. I was very very pleased with the doctors, nurses, and everybody. I felt like I was care about." (Boots - back surgery)

"Excellent service from both Doctor and Hospital. Would recommend them to anyone needing their services." (Richard)

"Thanks to Dr. Orndorff and his very competent staff, I finally have my life back! I experienced chronic pain for years and could barely sit, walk or have any type of quality life. Nothing I did would give me relief. I was very anxious and afraid to undergo this surgery but thanks to Dr. Orndorff and his excellent bed-side manner, I turned my life over to him and he gave me my life back in 10 fold. My family and I thank God daily for such a competent surgeon and staff." (Sandra)

Jim Youssef, MD

"Very good people...Especially Lance, Stacey, Jessica, Katie, Megan in nursing, Sonya at the front, Nancy in finance." (Matt)

After many years of strenuous lower back use in office equipment contract work, a major car accident, prostate cancer surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy, my left leg & hip area became very painful to walk & move on for many months. Once I met with Dr.Youseff last Nov. 2013, he explained the micro-discectomy procedure (for herniated disc) and how this would help my situation if I committed to the post op. therapy, etc. I had the surgery a year ago (12/2/13) and can't express my gratitude & thanks of how I have been able to pursue and accomplish many daily & outdoor activities that were non existence for a long period of time before the procedure last year. I have been referring friends & acquaintances to Spine Colorado every time the conversation comes up about any back problems they might be experiencing! The staff has been extremely helpful during my recovery this year in regards to any & all questions I have had without delay. Thanks to all of Dr. Youseffs team & Dr. Youseff for giving me the chance to experience physical mobility once again without the issues I was experiencing for an extended time within the past few years. Take care, Michael B. (Montrose, CO.)

Problem: L5-S1 Disc Herniation
Experience: "I am a 45-yr old, fairly active male, who was diagnosed with a severe L5-S1 Disc herniation that was giving me constant and severe pain down my right leg & buttocks. Lance and Dr. Youssef quickly ushered me through the necessary steps and protocols resulting in my successful microdiscectomy surgery. It has been 9 weeks since my surgery. I am pain free and continually improving daily. Thank you for giving me my life back." (Tom)

"Excellent care – My husband can bend over & touch his knees again. He’s beginning to walk normally. I would recommend these doctors! Thank you" (Kelly & Christopher)

"Couldn’t be in better hands! This is a place where you are treated both physically and spiritually; these people really care. I hope never to have to go to any other facility as this is the best place there is." (Gail)

"So very pleased with the consultation, diagnosis and treatment provided by Dr. Youssef and Lance. Terrific team, wonderful bedside manner and such a pleasure to know these two are caring for me!" (Alice)

"This is the most caring hospital I have ever been in. Not only did I receive care after my surgery—I received care before the surgery so I was well-prepared for what was to come. The nurses were wonderful as was Dr. Youssef and Lance." (Carmen)

"Very impressed with Dr. Youssef, his diagnosis and resolutions. He's very personable, confident and competent. I looking forward to surgery to resolve my spinal issues. Dr. Youssef staff, assistants and the receptionist have a very humanistic and compassionate approach to health care." (Sam - Spinal Stenosis)

"Thought that Drs. Youseff and Hamlin were great. Also the staff Casey, Stacy, and Melissa at the desk were very pleasant and helpful." (Harold)

"Very pleasant. Utmost confidence in this facility and all the people." (Ed)

Dr Youssef helps Greg return to walking and running after severe back and leg pain and numbness

Greg D. 60, has led an active outdoorsman’s life – snow skiing, hunting, fishing, hiking and more. He retired as a soccer referee in the spring of 2010 – but by August, he couldn’t run any longer. He started experiencing “zinging” down his back and legs. Greg attended his daughter’s spring 2010 graduation, but the next day both legs went numb.

Dr. Jim Youssef at Spine Colorado determined that Greg had two separate problems. The first was a thoracic myelopathy that was causing the gait disturbance, and was treated with thoracic decompression. A spondylolisthesis at L5/S1 caused low back pain and radiculopathy, and was treated with a spinal fusion. Greg spent only two days in the hospital, and was walking on the same day of surgery. Doctors told Greg that he must be able to walk a mile before leaving the hospital – but he walked 10-1/4 miles!

Greg admits to being “over-athletic and stupid in my younger years”, but is now back to an active lifestyle that includes archery hunting, and fishing. He recently ran two miles, but expects to run more. He can do anything he wants to do without any restrictions.

Greg’s advice to patients?

  • Listen to your Doctor.
  • Exercise physical therapy makes all the difference in your recovery.
  • Do core strengthening.
  • Go into your surgery in shape.
  • Have a positive attitude!

Watch as Greg and Dr. Youssef talk about Greg's successful recovery from back and leg symptoms with spine surgery.

Physician:

Dr. Jim Youssef is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, which is the highest level of training for a spine surgeon in the United States. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, fracture care, complex spinal disorders and alternatives to bony fusion in spine surgery.

George Baumchen, PA-C

"Exceptional as always. Caring and very thorough." (Anonymous)

"The doctor actually read my paperwork prior to seeing me so he didn't ask a lot of questions that I already answered. Everyone in the office was great, kind, and friendly. This was my first visit and I felt like I've been patient for years." (Sara)

Lance Hamlin, PA-C

BETTY OGREN, FARMINGTON

"I had numbness in my left foot that gradually went up my leg and then to my knee. It got to the point I thought I might fall. I love to dance, and when I couldn't do that any more, I talked to my daughter's mother-in-law, and she told me the doctors at Mercy are top notch, so I called Dr. Orndorff's office. He went through everything with us in detail and really explained what was wrong and how he was going to fix it. They made me feel special - and now I can dance again."

Dick Norton patient success

DICK NORTON, DURANGO

"Before I had surgery, I had numbness in my feet and legs, and my leg muscles were always tense. Sitting with my feet up was the only thing that provided any relief. It was hard for me to work. After my surgery, the symptoms were gone immediately. Looking back on my experience at the hospital, there's not one thing I could begin to complain about. I had a remarkable experience. I've never in my life had so many strangers focused on my wellbeing. I was almost embarrassed to have so much attention. Now, every time I see someone walking bent over and in pain, I think, 'You need to see Dr. Orndorff'."

DEBI CRAIG, DURANGO

"Before my surgery, the pain was so bad I couldn't sleep. I got horrible headaches and I couldn't do the sewing craft projects I love to work on because I was unable look down for long periods. But since my procedure, I feel like I got my life back. I'm pretty much pain free now. As far as my hospital experience, everybody was remarkable -- they were very patient with me, very kind and sympathetic."

HELEN BENNETT, CORTEZ

"Before my surgery at Mercy Regional Medical Center I had severe pain in my right thigh and hip. I couldn't get any ease from prescribed pain pills or ice packs. After my XLIF procedure, the pain on my right side was gone, and three weeks after my surgery, I had increased my [rehabilitative] walking to five miles a day, which I continue to do today. I am so thankful for Dr. Youssef and his associates for their knowledge and skills, and also the nurses for their special care at Mercy. We are very blessed to have these resources in our area."

john

JOHN TURGEON, BAYFIELD

"Without this procedure, my passion for life would have been done. I had constant lower back pain and I couldn't work or sleep, much less climb. But now I feel like I'm 25 again. Three months after surgery, I nearly summited Mt. McKinley carrying a 50-pound pack and and I hope to climb Everest in 2011. It's hard to put into words how well [Dr. Youssef] did, but what I really appreciate is that he treated me like a friend, not just a patient."

susanne

SUSANNE ROSS, TELLURIDE

"No surgery is a piece of cake, but I am still amazed by how well I felt overall and how immediate the positive results were (three months after surgery I can ski). If you feel as bad as I suppose you do, the payoff is worth whatever it takes. These people are amazing...! was lucky enough to be referred to Dr. Youssef -- he and his staff are seriously the best."
